A few years ago I wrote to Gregory Welch, an American painter whom I admire, regarding this painting:
I wrote this to him several years ago:
"I believe I communicated with you decades ago about the painting, and I just want to let you know that I still love it. I’m an old man now (76) and I have had the painting since 1981 I believe, and it just gets better and better. As I view it, it is a celebration of humanity and civilization, and homo’s infrastructure comes alive in that animate, organic bridge leading — almost walking — across the water to homo’s and the bridge’s city. You found and painted truth here. I experience it as pure, raw art. I hope you are still doing that. I don’t see much of that in painting today. It’s almost as if the painters are trying to meet expectations instead of finding and painting truth. Anyway, bless you. You are a painter."
I would love to communicate with him again. We exchanged a few text messages and then didn’t write anymore. If anyone can direct him to me or me to him I would be delighted. —Joe
